ASTM D7621 H2S Analyzer is a specialized instrument used to measure the amount of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in liquid fuels like heavy marine fuels and petroleum blends, following a specific standard test method. Its development was driven by health and safety concerns, as H₂S is a highly toxic and flammable gas that can accumulate to dangerous levels in storage tanks and ship holds.

Purpose & Principle: It measures the total H₂S content in the liquid phase of fuel oils with viscosities up to 3,000 cSt at 50°C, such as marine residual fuels and distillates. The test itself is automated and relatively fast, taking approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Core Technology (Vapor Phase Processor): The analyzer includes a "Vapor Phase Processor" (VPP). This built-in component removes chemical interferences like thiols (mercaptans) and alkyl sulfides, which would otherwise cause false high readings. This ensures the result accurately reflects only the H₂S concentration.
Measurement Range: The instrument typically can measure H₂S concentrations from 0 to 250 mg/kg (ppm) in the liquid phase.
Industry Significance: The standard is crucial for safety and regulatory compliance. International fuel specifications, such as ISO 8217, set a limit for liquid-phase H₂S (e.g., 2 ppm) in marine fuels, and this method serves as the referee test for compliance. Measuring liquid-phase H₂S helps assess the potential risk of hazardous vapor buildup in storage and transport.
Note: The standard (ASTM D7621) includes two procedures. Procedure A uses the VPP to eliminate interferences and is the primary, more accurate method. Procedure B is a simpler method but can produce elevated results if interfering compounds are present.
