Test Method A: Involves using a mercury-in-glass thermometer. The wax sample is applied to the bulb of the thermometer, and the thermometer is then heated in a water bath. The temperature at which the first drop of wax falls is recorded. This method requires caution due to the use of mercury, which is recognized as a hazardous substance.
Test Method B: This is an alternative method that uses an electronic instrument to detect the drop and measure the temperature with a platinum thermometer, eliminating the use of mercury for safety reasons. The wax is placed in a dropping point cup, and as it is heated, the temperature at which it drops is recorded.
